Nampa: 30 Is Too Old For Tubing

Jan 31, 2008 - 7:07

Sledding with an inner tube

A Canyon County man is in the hospital after a brutal sledding accident yesterday near the Pickles Butte landfill outside of Nampa.

The 30 year old man was tube sledding with a friend and apparently hit a jump while tubing down a ravine and was thrown up to 20 feet from the tube. He may have landed on his back, and the 911 caller described the man as bleeding from the mouth.

The St. Alphonsus LifeFlight helicopter was at the scene within minutes and paramedics at the scene were able to load the victim into the chopper after which he was transported to the Boise hospital. The man was conscious and talking.

So, what 30 year old slides down a snowy hill on an inner-tube? Even for a child that is the fastest and most dangerous way down a slick hill, and countless children are injured each year in similar accidents. We hope the victim in this accident makes a full recovery, but we also hope other adults will keep this incident in mind the next time someone offers them a tube at the top of some random snowy hill.

Follow-up: Injured Tuber Daniel Callsen slowly recovers from his multiple injuries from this incident. Callsen said was doing a "test run" to show a friend's children that it was safe to sled on the hill.
